The barristers at Landmark offer expertise in a wide range of practice areas. Members are instructed by a wide range of lay clients (Public Access), solicitors, and other entities, including, consultants, surveyors, engineers, architects, etc (Professional Access). They provide advice all over the world in multiple legal jurisdictions. Our Chambers is based in London and our barristers have been Called to the Bar of England and Wales. Several of our barristers have also been Called to overseas Bars allowing them to appear in Courts in a number of international jurisdictions.

Landmark’s Practice Management team will endeavour to provide realistic estimates as to the cost and time of any work required, based on their many years of experience. The services provided by our barristers are generally charged on a time basis by reference to an agreed hourly rate. As an alternative, some barristers may be prepared to charge fixed fees (or brief fees and a daily refresher – see below) for hearings, which is a sum ordinarily negotiated and agreed by our Practice Management team.

The brief fee usually covers all of the pre-hearing preparation and the first day of the hearing. The refresher fee is the agreed fixed rate for each subsequent day of a hearing. These fee estimates will take into account a number of factors including (but not limited to), the required preparation, the complexity of the issues, the seniority and expertise of the barrister and any reservation of diary time.

It is usual practice to agree a date by which the brief is delivered. This means that the fee will be due on a date before the hearing, to take into account the preparation the barrister will need to do to be ready for the first day of the hearing. Please note that fees are subject to VAT where applicable. Please let us know if you are based overseas and are exempt from paying VAT.

We always aim to set out quotes clearly, but if there is something you do not understand please contact us. When instructing a barrister on a Fixed Fee (including a Brief Fee), it is important to discuss and agree with the Practice Manager exactly what will be included within the agreed fee.


Factors which might influence the timescale of the provision of legal services include the complexity of the matter; the availability of the client, the barrister and any relevant third parties; the volume of documents to review; the need for additional information or documents; Court waiting times and the urgency of the matter. Our barristers aim to turn straightforward work around within 14 working days. Should any Landmark Chambers’ barrister be unable to meet that timetable, the client will be notified in good time in advance and, if necessary and agreed, the work will be allocated to another available and suitably experienced barrister so as to ensure that the client’s deadline is met.

Barristers’ Register

Landmark’s barristers are self-employed individuals, each of whom is regulated directly by the Bar Standards Board (BSB). The Barristers’ Register, which may be found here on the BSB’s website, is an online database which displays details of all barristers who are authorised to practise in England and Wales and who hold a current practising certificate. The Register displays the dates for which a barrister’s practising certificate is valid. It includes information about barristers’ practising status, the reserved legal activities they are authorised to undertake and whether they have been the subject of any disciplinary findings.

Professional Indemnity Insurance

Each barrister at Landmark Chambers is required to maintain their own professional indemnity insurance cover. The level of cover held by each barrister will vary dependent upon the type of work they undertake. It is important to check the level of cover held by a barrister prior to instructing them, as their individual liability (including Costs) will not under any circumstance whatsoever exceed the amount actually recovered on a claim made under their professional indemnity insurance policy or policies. All policies respond to claims on an “as made” basis: that is to say, the relevant amount of cover is the cover provided by each policy when any claim is made, not when any cause of action arose.

For the avoidance of doubt, the cap on barristers’ individual liability (including Costs) referred to above shall apply in all circumstances regardless of whether the instruction is accepted under Landmark’s Standard Conditions of Contract, or any other terms which may be agreed from time to time.
