A public inquiry opens today into the Foster+Partners scheme for The Tulip, a proposed 305m building adjacent to 30 St Mary Axe (the Gherkin). The building would house public viewing areas, bars and restaurants, and an education space for use by London school children. The proposals also include a new Pavilion building at ground level, and the reconfiguration of the urban realm around the Gherkin. Planning permission was refused following a direction of the Mayor of London. The City of London Corporation supports the proposals. The Inquiry is being conducted remotely and can be followed by YouTube. Further information on the scheme is available on the project website. Russell Harris QC and Richard Turney act for the Appellant, part of the J Safra Group. Neil Cameron QC acts for the City of London Corporation. Scott Lyness QC acts for Historic England.
