In a judgment handed down on 6 May 2014 the Grand Chamber of the Court of Justice of the European Union annulled Directive 2011/82/EU on the cross-border exchange of information on road safety related traffic offences finding that it had been made under the wrong legal basis: see Case C-43/12 Commission v European Parliament and Council. The Court though maintained the effects of the Directive for a period of 1 year to allow for a new Directive to be made on the correct legal basis. James Maurici QC acted for the United Kingdom, who were interveners in the case.
