City University and Landmark Chambers team up on public interest litigation project

Rectangle City University and Landmark Chambers team up on public interest litigation project 4

A group of five third-year undergraduate law students from City University have been working with Landmark Chambers on a ten-week project designed to highlight current issues and themes across various facets of public interest litigation.

Students Sana Noori, Muhammad Ahmad, Perishta Safi, Eileen Doran and Aishah Ali, brought their project to a close last week with a presentation to a group of Landmark barristers. They summarised the work carried out over the life of the project which included researching case law from the past year in the public interest litigation field and identifying themes in litigation. The group then went on to suggest ideas and to sketch out a proposed programme of activities (including talks, webinars and videos) to help Landmark continue to grow this key area of work. The City University students said: ‘’We greatly enjoyed carrying out the programme of work and discussing the project milestones and outcomes with the team at Landmark every week. It was really helpful to get an insight in to the kind of work that is carried out in the area of public interest litigation and to understand more about how barristers interact with their clients and share their legal expertise.”

Alex Shattock and Lisa Watts, who co-chaired the project, said: “We’ve been very impressed with the dedication and commitment shown by this group and very much appreciate the amount of work they have done. Their final presentations were absolutely fantastic. It’s been great to be able to support undergraduates with the focus being not just on legal research but also on how a legal organisation works with clients and helps members to build their legal practices. It’s been of huge benefit to us to hear the group’s ideas about how we as a Chambers can share our expertise in public interest litigation and engage with clients in innovative ways. We’re also proud to have been able to support their studies with industry experience that we hope will have complemented the other elements of their law degrees.”
