Appeal allowed for 100% affordable housing scheme in Tower Hamlets

Tower Hamlets

After a 2 week inquiry in September 2023, a planning inspector has allowed an appeal and granted planning permission for a 9-storey residential development on Bow Road in Tower Hamlets.

The scheme is promoted by the Clarion Housing Group – the country’s largest social landlord – and was designed by PRP architects. All of the new homes will be delivered for social rent.

The Inspector decided that the building would not appear out of place in the diverse street scene along Bow Road. He decided there would only be limited harm to the significance of the Tredegar Square Conservation Area, that the scheme “would achieve adequate levels of daylight and sunlight for their occupants within the urban context in which the building would stand”, and in the end that “the public benefits of the appeal scheme are considerable” – including delivering new affordable homes for affordable rent in a Borough where housing needs are “pressing” and “acute”.

The decision is available here.

Zack Simons and Isabella Buono acted for Clarion, instructed by Simon Slatford at Lichfields.
