Sasha White QC is a specialist planning, public and environmental barrister who has been consistently recognised as one of the leading barristers in the field since being called in 1991 after graduating from Trinity College, Cambridge in law.

He is instructed by most of the major developers, retailers and housebuilders in the UK.

He was appointed Queens Counsel in 2013.

Sasha is ranked 7th in Planning Magazine's 2018 Top Rated Planning Silks.

  • Tesco Stores Limited – advised on over 100 schemes over the course of 16 years ranging from the first Express store granted on appeal to Extra format. [1998-2014]
  • TWS v Manchester City Council and FC United [2012 and 2013] – Appeared on behalf of FC United in both the High Court and the Court of Appeal on the provision of a new football stadium in Manchester.
  • Derwent Holdings v Trafford Borough Council and Lancashire Cricket Club [2011] – Appeared as Junior for Tesco Stores in both High Court and the Court of Appeal.
  • Morge v Hampshire County Council – Appeared in first case in Supreme Court to consider the application of the Habitats Directive in UK Law. [2010]
  • University College London – Appeared for developer in relation to inquiry into 350 unit student accommodation development in Islington. [2010]
  • Prudhoe Town Centre Redevelopment – won major High Court challenge for rival retailer against the grant of superstore permission for J Sainsburys and redevelopment of town centre. [2010]
  • Gates Hydraulics v Secretary of State – Appeared successfully in seminal case considering the legal effect of Statement of Common Grounds in planning inquiries. [2009]
  • Amesbury Retail Inquiry – Appeared successfully at call in Inquiry for Tesco against 3 other competing retailers in getting out of centre retail permission for Superstore. [2009]
  • Swindon Town Centre Redevelopment – Advised successfully in relation to town centre redevelopment proposals for developer. [2009]
  • Retirement Village, West Wales – Appeared in call in inquiry promoting first fully serviced retirement village in the UK.[2009]
  • Michael Shanley PLC – Appeared successfully in relation to call in inquiry in relation to 460 unit redevelopment site in Maidenhead on the most investigated site in the UK. [2008]
  • National Grid Holdings PLC – advised in relation to redevelopment of contaminated site for use for 200 unit residential site. [2008]
  • Grainger Trust Limited – advised in relation to 2000 home new settlement in Hampshire. [2003]
  • Durham Retail Inquiry – Appeared successfully for developer in call in inquiry dealing with 3 large rival retail schemes in Durham [2003]
  • Falmouth Cornwall – Appeared successfully for House builder in inquiry seeking permission for 300 unit residential scheme. [2003]
  • Blueprint Site Portsmouth –Advised successfully on major urban redevelopment proposals for British Gas. [2003]
  • Newcastle Great Park – advised in relation to largest development site in UK involving 2500 new houses and 800 hectares of associated development in Newcastle. [2002-2010]
  • P&O Developments – advised in relation to London Gateway Port redevelopment – largest new port in Europe [2001-2003]
  • Newcastle Falcons PLC – Appeared successfully at call in inquiry for new rugby stadium in Green Belt in Newcastle. [2001]
  • Portsmouth Incinerator inquiry – Appeared for local authority at call in inquiry seeking to resist the grant of planning permission for large incinerator on Portsea Island. [2000]
  • Brent Cross Expansion inquiry – Appeared for local authority at call in inquiry supporting the expansion of Brent Cross. [1999]
  • Basingstoke Town Centre Redevelopment – Appeared for main objector to redevelopment scheme of Town Centre by Grosvenor Estates [1997]
  • Woodlands Park MSA inquiry – Appeared for developer at call in inquiry into Motorway Service Area on western sector of M25. [1996]
  • Peterborough Retail inquiry – Appeared for developer at Call in inquiry into 11 separate retail warehouse schemes in Peterborough [1996]
  • Liverpool Airport PLC – advised in relation to redevelopment of airport seeking to secure major expansion in passenger numbers from 0.5 million to 20 million. [1995]

In his free time Sasha:

  • Has a season ticket at Arsenal FC, Rangers FC, London Scottish FC and Murrayfield.
  • Coaches and manages the Oxfordshire U13s county cricket team.
  • Watches cricket at Lords and Canterbury.
  • Plays golf at Huntercombe and Alnmouth Golf Clubs.
  • Plays cricket for Aston Rowant CC where he is also Vice Chairman.
