Satya Jeremie has joined Landmark Chambers as an associate member, bringing significant expertise in public interest law to Chambers’ 53-strong public law group. A lifelong social activist, Satya was admitted as an attorney at law in Port of Spain and notably acted in a challenge to absolute parliamentary immunity brought by an MP alleging defamation and an examination of the power to pardon in habeas corpus proceedings brought by insurrectionists who claimed to be the beneficiaries of a prospective pardon. In the latter, Lennox Phillip v AG for Trinidad and Tobago, Lord Ackner described the principle ‘of general application which is of the greatest importance’ that the State cannot be allowed to use a power to pardon to enable the law to be set aside by permitting it to be contravened with impunity’. This has been followed in the right to die/assisted suicide cases (highlighting the need for specific legislation). Having convened a multi-disciplinary team from the UK and US, Jeremie is currently involved in a group claim on behalf of abused gymnasts against their governing body, which has been subject to widespread media interest. She was recently working on public law challenges for claims arising out of joint ventures within the energy sector in the Commercial Court and ECSC Court of Appeal, and advising a Trinidadian State Corporation as Respondent to an appeal in the Privy Council. Satya took her undergraduate degree at the University of the West Indies, her Legal Education Certificate from Sir Hugh Wooding Law School, Port of Spain and holds a Masters in Law from King’s College London. She is currently advising a number of ‘outsider artists’, including street artists, who are gaining recognition from the art world on their own terms. In addition to her legal practice, Jeremie has put her values into action through Sesquis, an organisation which matches university students with part-time roles and worked with the City of Westminster to promote the intergenerational transfer of IT skills; Commenting on her appointment, Satya Jeremie said: “I’m delighted to join the talented team of practitioners at Landmark and look forward to drawing on the public law expertise in chambers as we expand our reach into public interest law across a number of causes, campaigns and jurisdictions.” Reuben Taylor QC, Joint Head of Chambers comments: The breadth of Satya’s experience and the calibre of her work means that she is an excellent addition to our public law group. We look forward to supporting her as she develops her practice across cases which are of significant public interest and to assisting in developing the international aspects of her work.
