On 5 February 2026, the Government launched a statutory consultation on proposals for local government reorganisation in 14 further areas. The consultations are due to close on 26 March 2026.
The consultation follows final reorganisation proposals from councils in the final 14 invitation areas, including Cambridgeshire, Derbyshire, Devon, Gloucestershire, Hertfordshire, Kent, Lancashire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Staffordshire, Warwickshire, and Worcestershire
In the meantime, a judicial review is currently underway to hear the challenge brought by Reform UK against the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government seeking to prevent the Secretary of State from making any statutory orders pursuant to section 87 of the Local Government Act 2000 to delay the local election dates in May 2026. A two day rolled up hearing has been listed for 19 February 2026.
