Appeal refused for planning permission to redevelopment former Westgate Road Police Station

Police

Newcastle City Council have successfully defended a refusal of planning permission for redevelopment of the Former Westgate Road Police Station site into a mixed use development containing a drive-thru fast food restaurant on one of the main routes into the city. The Appellants claimed that the benefits of the scheme outweighed any impact on the amenity of residents from overlooking and privacy and that other concerns regarding public health, highway safety, design as well as noise. The Inspector refused the appeal finding that the invasion of privacy and extent of overlooking would be substantial whilst the design of the scheme was unsatisfactory. Joe Thomas acted for the successful interested party, West End Residents’ Association, instructed by Charles Dix. The appeal may be found here.
