Richard advises on all aspects of environmental law. His clients include large international corporations, regulators, local authorities and other public sector organizations. He has particular expertise in the following areas:

Recent/ongoing cases includes: 

  • Successfully representing United Utilities Water Plc in the Supreme Court in a case concerning the right of utility companies to discharge into private watercourse (led by Jonathan Karas QC)
  • Judicial review against Natural England challenging its approach to granting licence to capture and kill buzzards
  • Wheeler v Norwich Magistrates: appeal by way of case stated successfully challenging the Magistrates’ jurisdiction to award costs to 3rd parties in complaints under the Highways Act 1980
  • Advising on the preparation of environmental statements for housing and retail developments
  • Acting for the City of London defending its decision to proceed with the £17m Ponds Project on Hampstead Heath
  • Acting for the Marine Management Organisation defending its decision to grant a licence for marine dredging near Devonport Naval Base
  • Acting for the Environment Agency at 2 week inquiry in test cases concerning its approach to water permitting
  • Bristol International Airport: Representing North Somerset District Council in judicial review proceedings challenging the grant of planning permission for a major expansion of Bristol Airport. advising Natural England and a consortium of local planning authorities in relation to the Thames Basin Special Protection Area
  • Advising Covanta Energy Limited in relation to a proposed RDF energy from waste facility.
