Richard advises on all aspects of environmental law. His clients include large international corporations, regulators, local authorities and other public sector organizations. He has particular expertise in the following areas:

  • all aspects of energy projects, particularly bioenergy and other renewables

  • waste management, including WEEE
  • contaminated land
  • environmental permitting

Recent/ongoing cases includes: 

  • Bristol International Airport: Representing North Somerset District Council in judicial review proceedings challenging the grant of planning permission for a major expansion of Bristol Airport. The grounds of claim raise important issues concerning the relevance of climate change to individual planning decisions (with Neil King QC);
  • advising Natural England and a consortium of local planning authorities in relation to the Thames Basin Special Protection Area (with David Elvin QC)
  • advising Covanta Energy Limited in relation to a proposed RDF energy from waste facility.

QUALIFICATIONS

Richard read law at Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge (BA 2001; LLM 2003 (First Class). He was awarded the Alexander LLM Scholarship and the Huston Putnam Lowry LLM prize.

Since 2003 Richard has been a supervisor in administrative law teaching students at a number of Cambridge colleges. Richard obtained the BVC (Outstanding) from the College of Law in 2004 and was awarded the Baron Van der Heyden De Lancey Prize by Middle Temple, and the 1 Essex Court Prize for Advocacy by the College of Law, 2004.
