Emma was called to the Bar by Gray’s Inn in 2009. She joined Chambers in September 2010 after successfully completing her pupillage at Landmark. Emma accepts instructions in all areas of Chambers’ work but has a particular interest in planning and public law.
Since joining Chambers Emma has gained experience in many areas of planning and environmental law, both as a Junior to other members of chambers and individually. She frequently appears in public inquiries often concerning residential housing schemes, enforcement appeals and at examinations in public. Her public inquiry work has included a large scale residential scheme in Sussex, and an accompanying judicial review, alongside Christopher Boyle.
Emma regularly appears in court on planning matters, including environmental crime and planning enforcement cases. She also undertakes advisory work on a wide range of issues within this area.
During her pupillage Emma gained experience of environmental issues, particularly in relation to Environmental Impact Assessment and Waste.
Emma undertakes a wide range of public law work. She has appeared in cases before the Asylum and Immigration Tribunal and in courts across the county generally on social security and child support matters.
Her advisory work has covered many areas of public law including freedom of information, education, statutory interpretation and recently advice for the Marine Management Organisation in connection with the European Fisheries Fund.
Emma also has experience of clerking and representation for education transfer and exclusion appeals.
Emma regularly appears in both residential and commercial possession actions and small claims cases in the County Courts and before the Rent Assessment Committee and the Residential Property Tribunal.
She advises on all aspects of property law, particularly in the sphere of Landlord and Tenant law on issues such as disrepair, licensing, and the construction of landlord and tenant’s obligations.
Emma undertakes pro-bono work for the Free Representation Unit and the Bar Pro Bono Unit. For the past year she has also been working with the Prince's Foundation for Building Community developing a scheme for parish housing in light of the recent neighbourhood planning legislation
Emma has a love of singing, appearing in a wide range of productions from The Mikado to The Magic Flute. In her spare time she enjoys playing squash and walking her Welsh Springer Spaniel.
Emma graduated with an LLB (Hons first class) from the London School of Economics in 2007 coming first in her final year.
In 2008 she completed a masters in law (LLM) at Corpus Christi College Cambridge and the Bar Vocational course at BPP in 2009.
She received the Gray’s Inn Bedingfield Scholarship during her B.V.C. year and was a senior scholar of the Inn during her pupillage year (Reid Scholarship).
Emma is a member of UKELA and PEBA.
