Lord Justice Carnwath CVO appointed to the Supreme Court

Landmark is delighted that Lord Justice Carnwath, a former member of Chambers, has been appointed to the Supreme Court.
Lord Justice Carnwath’s main areas of practice at the Bar were Local Government, Planning, Administrative and Environmental Law. Between 1980 and 1985, he was Junior Counsel to the Inland Revenue and took silk in 1985. He served as Chairman of the Administrative Law Bar Association, and between 1988 and 1994 was Attorney–General to HRH Prince of Wales, following which he was made Companion of the Victorian Order. Whilst a member of Chambers he authored the Carnwath Report (Enforcing Planning Control; HMSO, 1989), which resulted in the changes to the law included in the Planning and Compensation Act 1991. He was appointed to the High Court bench in 1994, and became Chairman of the Law Commission for England and Wales from February 1999 until July 2002. He was appointed a Lord Justice of Appeal in September 2001, and has since 2004 been the first Senior President of Tribunals.
