Secretary of State rejects Manchester City Council CPO of London Road Fire Station

The Secretary of State today issued his decision accepting the recommendation of his Inspector to not confirm the proposed CPO made by Manchester City Council of the former London Road Fire Station in Piccadilly, Manchester in the ownership of Britannia Hotels. The decision confirmed that the public interest advanced by the Council was not compelling, that the owner (which had been granted planning permission to regenerate the site to use it for a new hotel) was more likely to be able to renovate and reuse the hotel than the Council’s preferred option, the viability of the Council’s scheme was questionable and that the case advanced that the building was in a poor state and required immediate remedial work had been exaggerated.
