New post-Brexit independent environmental standards body

The Government has announced that it will consult in early 2018 on a new post-Brexit independent statutory body to advise on future environmental legislation and hold public bodies to account on environmental standards.

The body is intended to replace the role currently played by the European Commission in monitoring the meeting of environmental targets, scrutinising new legislation and taking action against illegal behaviour.

The Government also wants to publish a new policy statement to enshrine in one place key environmental principles like “sustainable development” and the “polluter pays” principle, which are currently found in the EU Treaties.

The Environment Secretary’s press release is available here.
