As with so many professions barristers may charge by the hour until the problem is solved or they may charge a fixed fee for the work regardless of how long it takes. It is important that this is agreed at the outset and you should speak to the barrister’s Clerk who is like a business manager to agree how much an advice or a hearing will cost. They will discuss with you and negotiate the fee on behalf of the barrister.
When the work is completed the Clerk will send out a fee note which is due for payment within 30 days of the work being done. Cheques should be made out to the individual barrister concerned and not to Chambers. This is because all barristers are self-employed. Prompt payment is much appreciated. Please note that all fees carry VAT.
If you are unhappy with the work done by Counsel it is important that you contact the Clerk at the earliest opportunity and do not just ignore the fee note. Misunderstandings and errors do occur from time to time and it is often better to speak to our Clerks who will attempt to resolve it amicably.
If you are not able to pay Counsel within 30 days our accounts department will contact you. It would be much appreciated if you would contact Louise Garbutt on 020 7421 1343 regarding outstanding fees as soon as you receive a letter from her. That way we can avoid sending you unnecessary reminders.
