Matthew Reed has considerable experience in representing councils, companies and individuals in both criminal and civil environmental litigation. His case load deals with waste, contaminated land and environmental permitting (both under the new and old systems). He advises and represents prosecutors and defendants on abatement notice proceedings under the Environmental Protection Act 1990 and New Roads and Street Works Act 1991 proceedings, including appeals to the High Court (see, for example, Hertfordshire County Council v National Grid [2008] 1 All E.R. 1137). He has considerable experience in the field of contaminated land, providing a range of advice on the potential liability of companies to the Part 2A regime. In 2007, he represented Redland Minerals Ltd in the first special site inquiry into a remediation notice over land at Sandridge, St Albans, on which the decision of the Secretary of State is still awaited.  In the planning sphere, he has been involved in numerous environmentally-related appeals, including windfarm applications, waste sites and composting developments. He was a contributor to the Oxford University Press Environmental Law, dealing particularly with industrial pollution control and is a contributor the forthcoming review of that publication.
